Description

In this course you will learn about addictions and the problems associated with substance misuse.

You will learn about the basic counselling skills that are required when treating individuals with substance misuse disorders.

You will acknowledge that alcohol addiction can lead to severe health problems over the long term.

Many individuals who suffer from alcohol abuse develop health complications that require appropriate medical intervention, which will be looked at in detail in this course.

You will consider that despite someone's willingness to engage in recovery and to completely quit a substance, some intrusive thoughts and cravings for a drug might still appear out of nowhere.

This course will look at detoxification, or detox and that it is the process of removing any chemicals and substances associated with a drug from one's body.

A detox process helps individuals safely manage their withdrawal symptoms when they stop consuming alcohol or drugs.

You will learn that addictions affect the brain and behaviour in such a way that people who misuse substances regularly find it difficult to resist urges and to quit.

At the end of this course you will look at the factors that can significantly decrease the well-being of someone who misuses substances to cope with the demands of their life.

The aggressive and violent behaviours that result from drug abuse can increase violent and even fatal incidents in communities and can even lead to murder and crime.

You will learn that an addiction increases the incidence of homelessness and vagrancy, which poses concern to the health and safety of communities.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

  • Unit 3 - Types of dependencies - This unit will give you a more detailed overview into various types of addictions. You will have the chance to learn more about how each type of dependency manifests in various individuals, according to their predisposing factors and individual vulnerabilities. Since all types of substances can impact individuals differently according to their individual factors, this unit also aims to explore the categories of people that are most at risk for each type of substance use.
  • Unit 4 - Getting help for dependency - This unit will explore different ways in which individuals who suffer from substance misuse disorder and dependency can cope with their addictions and develop resilience. You will be guided through treatment alternatives and options that individuals with dependency can be supported with. Furthermore, this unit will also look at possible ways in which people can respond to treatment and interventions for drug addiction.
  • Unit 5 - Problems associated with dependency - In this final unit, we will explore the different areas that are affected and damaged by a substance misuse disorder. Since addiction affects all areas of life, such as health, relationships, employment, and social life, it is important to acknowledge all the implications that result from misusing substances. FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
